So you are interested in joining North Idaho Search Dogs? Great!
Let's begin with the nuts and bolts. While all puppies are cute, and most dogs are very nice, not all dogs make great search dogs. There are many factors that determine whether or not a dog will be a suitable SAR dog. The age of the dog, size, degree of drive, and temperment are all crucial factors. North Idaho Search Dogs does not allow any animal aggressive or people aggressive dogs to be members of our organization. Handlers must be in good physical condition as searches can sometimes be grueling and training a search dog is a very physical endeavor.
Interested applicants should contact the North Idaho Search Dog membership coordinator to begin the application process. Please send an email to dana@northidahosearchdogs to express your interest in applying. In your email, please note whether you would like to join as a canine handler or as a support member.
Orientation Session
An orientation session is held every June to outline NISD's mission, training, and expectations to interested persons. During the orientation session, those who would like to apply for membership with NISD may fill out an application. All applications will be submitted to the NISD board members.
Applications Reviewed by the Board
NISD board members will review and consider all applications submitted at the orientation session. Qualified applicants will be invited to a canine testing session and/or interview as appropriate. If it is determined by the board that the applicant is a good candidate for NISD membership, a recommendation of acceptance is given to NISD's active membership.
Active Member Vote
Once the active, voting members of NISD recieve the recommendation, they will then vote on whether or not the candidate should become a member of NISD. Upon approval by a majority vote, the candidate will then recieve probationary membership status with North Idaho Search Dogs.
